Call first, always
An Animal Control Officer is reached Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the shelter on 434-848-0912. At all other times leave a message with the Sheriff's Office at 434-848-3133. In an emergency call 9-1-1.

What the rabies rules require
- Every animal bite involving a person must be reported to the Health Department within 24 hours
- If your animal is bitten by another animal, wild or domestic, confine it and report the incident
- An animal without a current rabies vaccination is quarantined for ten days at the owner's expense
If it can be done without further danger, confine the animal until an officer can secure it for testing or investigation.
What the shelter does not do
- The shelter is not a state-approved facility for cats
- Animal Control does not pick up deceased animals. On a highway or VDOT right-of-way, call the Sheriff at 434-848-3133; on private property, removal is the landowner's responsibility
- The shelter does not board animals
- Traps are not loaned to the public. Call an officer at 434-848-0912 instead
