Brunswick County intends this site to be usable by every resident, including residents who browse with a screen reader, a keyboard alone, magnification, or reduced motion.
The standard behind this site
This site is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. That standard is the one referenced by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and by the Commonwealth's accessibility policy for public bodies.
What that means in practice on these pages: every page has one heading structure you can navigate by, every image that carries meaning has a text description, every form field has a label, color is never the only way information is given, and the whole site can be operated from the keyboard with a visible focus ring.
What was tested
Every page template on this site is checked automatically against the WCAG 2.2 AA rule set on each build, at desktop and at mobile widths, with scripting on and with scripting off. Colour pairs are checked by measurement rather than by eye. Motion respects the reduced-motion setting your device already carries.
Automated checking finds a large share of barriers, not all of them. Judgement calls, such as whether a link's text makes sense out of context or whether a description says the right thing about a photograph, are reviewed by a person.
Documents
Documents published before a site is rebuilt are the hardest part of any County's accessibility work, and this one is honest about it: some of the older scanned records on the document shelf are images of paper, with no text layer, and a screen reader cannot read them. Where that is true the record says so. If you need one of those documents in a form you can read, ask and the County will provide it.
Other ways to reach the County
Every County service can also be completed by telephone or at a counter. The directory lists the office that owns each errand, and the service pages say which ones can be finished without a trip.
