The Commissioner is elected every four years and works under Title 58.1 of the Code of Virginia, the Virginia General Assembly, the Department of Taxation, and the Board of Supervisors.
The office assesses real estate and personal property, assesses new construction and remodeling each year, maintains ownership records and tax maps, helps residents file Virginia individual income and estimated tax returns, administers tax relief for qualifying disabled veterans, and processes the transient occupancy tax.
