Walk the whole street

Why there is sculpture on a shopping street

Exxon closed its Western Slope operations, and by the Creative District’s own account that left “Grand Junction a virtual ghost town.” The answer downtown chose was not a retail incentive. Dave Davis, an artist and Director of The Art Center of Western Colorado, assembled ten area sculptors, and on August 5, 1984 Main Street carried its first exhibit of 24 sculptures.

Grand Junction was one of the first cities in the nation to put an outdoor sculpture exhibition on its commercial street. The collection still turns over every year, it still stands outside in the weather, and it is still catalogued by the street number it stands on, which is why this site is built the way it is.
