Could Have Been
Could Have Been was inspired by the thought that nothing really lasts forever. While this sculpture was in progress, I saw the end of a relationship with someone who, for a minute, really seemed like they would always stay. It’s a familiar storyline for so many of us, and one I felt could be turned into beautiful abstraction. This sculpture holds two figures that could fit perfectly together, but don’t. Each side of the piece is finished differently. One is a representation of the way life can begin to look colorless and flat if a relationship is forced to live on past when it’s supposed to; the other narrates a situation being loved while it lasts, and then let go. In a universe that holds infinite alternate endings, we are caught in a reality where things work out in unexplainable ways, but life keeps moving unceasingly. If nothing lasts forever, we might as well find beauty in the change and learn to love the unpredictable future. Madeline is one of three CMU students selected for this year’s exhibit.
