Free, statewide, no obligation

Homebuyer and Rental Education

Free classes run by CHFA participating agencies across Connecticut, for people buying, renting, or renting out.

Class types

Pre-purchase homebuyer education covers what buying actually involves: budgeting, credit, the mortgage process, working with a lender and an agent, and what happens at a closing. Some CHFA programs require it.

Pre-closing homebuyer education comes later, once you are under contract, and covers what to expect between commitment and keys.

Landlord education is for people renting out a unit, often in a two- or three-family they have just bought. It covers screening, leases, fair housing, and maintenance obligations.

Financial fitness is broader and earlier: budgeting, saving, and repairing credit before a purchase is realistic.

Where the classes are

Classes are taught by CHFA participating, HUD-approved counseling agencies from Bridgeport to New London to Waterbury. There is no charge, and taking a class does not obligate you to anything.
