Workforce & Community

Workforce & Community

Southwest Tech's stated purpose runs past its own students: customized training for area employers, apprenticeship programs built with local trades, continuing education for working adults, and community classes open to anyone in the district.

Customized training for employers

Southwest Tech's own College Purposes commit it to providing "customized training, retraining, and technical assistance to businesses and other organizations" across the district, alongside the apprenticeship, certificate, technical diploma, and associate degree programs that prepare people for those same employers' jobs.

Faculty across the College are industry experts already teaching hands-on, work-based programs; that same expertise is available to design training built around a specific shop floor, crew, or clinic.

Apprenticeships

Southwest Tech runs registered apprenticeship programs built with local trades, pairing paid on-the-job hours with related instruction on the Fennimore campus.

Continuing education and community classes

Southwest Tech offers continuing education to both enrolled students and the general public: driver education for teens and adults, CPR and EMS training, fire services and law enforcement continuing education, allied health classes, and public and traffic safety courses, alongside farm and business training for people who already work in the district.

Farm Business & Production Management

Continuing Education

Individuals enrolled in these adult farm management classes include active farm producers, FSA beginning farm loan borrowers, farm managers, landowners, lenders, and anyone wishing to become more knowledgeable about production agriculture. Our value-added courses are short and straight to the point, giving you the tools to maximize your nutrient management planning. We address current demands in the marketplace, allowing you to succeed.

Dairy Goat Herd Management

Certificate

An experienced producer or novice goat farmer can enroll in the certificate to fine tune their farm management skills and gain the knowledge to support a full-time commercial dairy goat operation. A student may choose to take just one course or the whole certificate. The courses average 6-10 hours in length and can be taken anywhere. The student will gain skills needed to begin, maintain, manage, and profit from a commercial dairy goat operation. The program includes presentations from speakers of expertise offering their knowledge and experiences in the commercial goat industry.

Southwest Tech also trains new driver-education instructors through Driver Safety Education Certification, for the commercial and private driving schools that serve the district.
