A north woods lodge with a stone fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows onto the airfield, and a gift shop that sells more cherry products than anywhere else you will fly out of.
The Building
The terminal was designed by Reynolds, Smith and Hills of Jacksonville, Florida, in an Arts and Crafts idiom drawn from Frank Lloyd Wright, and it was built to hold the openness of the Grand Traverse region rather than to look like an airport anywhere else.
The welcome area reads as a north woods lodge, with a stone fireplace lit through the winter. Cherry wood, copper light fixtures, stone wainscoting and stained glass carry through the rest of the building.
Before security
Checking In
Passengers being dropped off come in under a weather-resistant canopy. Inside, you can check in at an airline counter or use a self-service computer, print a boarding pass and go straight to security.
Baggage screening is done in the terminal by the Transportation Security Administration.
After security
The Gate Area
The passenger waiting area has floor-to-ceiling windows onto the airfield. Six flight desks flank the room, four boarding bridges reach out from the building, and a set of stairs goes down to the tarmac for regional aircraft that board from the ground.
Wireless internet is free throughout, and there are private phone areas for anyone who has to take a call before boarding.

The gift shop carries cherry products, hats, shirts, books, magazines, and toiletries, and sells carry-on bags that meet TSA rules.
