What limits the airport
Facility constraints
Cherry Capital Airport has facility constraints that limit our ability to accommodate diverted flights or maintain safe operation. We ask aircraft operators to contact the Airport Operations Supervisor at 231-313-0928 to coordinate a diversion in advance, except in a declared in-flight emergency, or for assistance during a diversion or other irregular operation.

Deplaning passengers
We do not own or operate the equipment needed to safely deplane passengers from air carrier aircraft, and airport personnel are not trained to use equipment owned by airlines or contract service providers. We have asked every airline, ground handler and fixed base operator on the airport to provide a list of their deplaning equipment and resources, along with contact information. We will pass that inventory and contact information to an airline as soon as practicable after the airline requests it during an excessive tarmac delay, at the coordination number above.
Sharing gates in an emergency
Cherry Capital Airport cannot accommodate aircraft larger than a Boeing 757 at its gates. Larger aircraft deplane passengers from remote parking positions instead. Gates 1 through 4 are under preferential lease to airlines, but we can use them during emergencies. We may direct a tenant airline to host another carrier's aircraft at its leased gate when the tenant is not using or scheduled to use it, and will direct our tenant airlines to make gates and other facilities available to a carrier seeking to deplane, to the extent practicable, whenever the gate is not in use or not scheduled to be.
International diversions
Passengers awaiting customs
Cherry Capital Airport has no facilities for processing international passengers. For a diverted flight carrying passengers who have not yet cleared United States Customs and Border Protection, we will coordinate with local Customs and Border Protection officials and law enforcement to set up a temporary sterile area, and will work with Customs and Border Protection on procedures to deplane those passengers into it, to the extent practicable.
