Privacy Policy for techequity.us
Last Updated: October 2026
We care about your privacy.
This privacy policy has been compiled to better serve those who are concerned with how their ‘Personal Information’ is being used online. Personal Information, as described in US privacy law (including the California Consumer Privacy Act, “CCPA”), is information that identifies, relates to, describes, is reasonably capable of being associated with, or could reasonably be linked, directly or indirectly, with a particular consumer or household. Please read our privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how we collect, use, protect, disclose, or otherwise handle your Personal Information in accordance with our website.
TL;DR
- We collect your name and contact information only when you provide it through actions like signing up for our newsletter, registering for an event, filling out a form, or donating.
- We use that information to inform our communications, as well as to communicate with you. We never sell your personal information.
- Like most nonprofit websites, we use a handful of third-party tools (analytics, email delivery, spam protection) to keep the Site running and understand how people use it. They are all listed below.
- You can opt out of cookies and tracking.
- If you share your story with us, we’ll respect the level of anonymity you request and share it with legislators, the press, or the public only if you’ve agreed.
- Questions? Email us at info@techequity.us.
What personal information do we collect from the people that visit our website?
When you sign up for our newsletter or mailing list, register for or RSVP to an event, fill out a contact, feedback, or advocacy form, or make a donation or become a member, we may ask for your name, email address, mailing address, and phone number—whatever we need to follow up with you.
The categories of Personal Information we collect include: identifiers (such as name, email address, mailing address, and phone number); internet or other electronic network activity information (such as browsing history, search history, and information regarding your interaction with our website); and any other information you voluntarily provide to us.
We don’t collect credit card or other payment details ourselves. A third-party payment provider handles donations and other payments, as described below.

We retain Personal Information only for as long as reasonably necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements, or until you request its deletion.
We use what you share with us to:
- To personalize your experience and to allow us to deliver the type of content in which you are most interested.

How do we protect your information?
Our website is scanned on a regular basis for security holes and known vulnerabilities in order to make your visit to our site as safe as possible. We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the personal information we collect—including access controls and encryption (such as SSL/TLS) for information submitted through the Site.
Your Personal Information is contained behind secure networks and is only accessible by a limited number of persons who have special access rights to such systems, and are required to keep the information confidential
We implement a variety of security measures when a user enters, submits, or accesses their information to maintain the safety of your Personal Information.
Donations and other payments go through a third-party payment provider and aren’t stored on our servers. That said, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.
What happens when I share my story?
We collect the stories you share with us to raise awareness, advocate for stronger protections for tech workers and renters, and inform our policy and public education work.
When you share your story with us, for example, through our Share Your Story page, you decide how much to tell us. You can include your name or stay anonymous; we’ll work with you to give you whatever level of anonymity you need. Along with your story, we may ask for your email address, zip code, whether you work in the tech industry, and any files you’d like to attach.
We don’t share anything that could identify you unless you give us permission. If you ask us to share your story, we may share it with lawmakers, journalists, or the public. Once we’ve shared your story at your request, we can’t control how the recipient uses or further shares it.
What happens when I donate?
When you donate, we record the name and contact information you provide so we can thank you and provide receipts for tax purposes. Any email we send will contain information about how to unsubscribe from the applicable list.
We do not sell, rent, or share our donor list.
We do not process online donation payments. We use Donorbox, and donations processed are subject to their privacy policy, available here.
How long do we keep your information?
We generally keep personal information only for as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy, or until you ask us to remove it. For example:
- Newsletter and mailing list: we keep your information until you unsubscribe.
- Event registrations and donations: we keep this information for as long as needed to maintain accurate program and financial records.
- You can ask us to delete your information at any time by emailing info@techequity.us.
Do we use ‘cookies’?
Yes. Cookies are small files that a site or its service provider places on your computer through your web browser (if you allow it), which let the site or provider recognize your browser and remember certain information. Like most websites, we also use similar tracking technologies—tags, pixels, and software development kits —to run the Site, understand how visitors use it, and, in some cases, support our outreach.
As of October 2026, here are the third-party tools running on the Site and what they’re for:
- Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager – understanding site traffic and usage, and managing our other tags
- Meta (Facebook) Pixel – measuring and improving our advertising
- LinkedIn Insight Tag – measuring and improving our advertising
- Hotjar – understanding how visitors use the Site, which may include recording or replaying how visitors interact with pages
- New Relic – keeping the Site fast and reliable
- Google reCAPTCHA – keeping spam and bots out of our forms, which shares some visitor information with Google
- Campaign Monitor – delivering emails when you submit certain forms on the Site
These providers may place cookies or use similar technologies on your device, and may collect information like your IP address, browser type, pages visited, and how you interact with the Site. Some may share information with others for their own purposes, like advertising.
We use cookies to:
- Understand how visitors use the Site so we can improve it
- Remember your preferences for future visits
- Support and measure our outreach
You can choose to have your computer warn you each time a cookie is being sent, or you can choose to turn off all cookies. You do this through your browser settings. Since every browser is a little different, look at your browser’s Help Menu to learn the correct way to modify your cookies. If you turn cookies off, some Site features may not work as well, though you’ll still be able to browse the Site and submit forms.
A few more ways to manage tracking:
- Google Analytics: opt out with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on
- Advertising cookies: opt out of interest-based advertising via the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page and the Google Ads Settings page
- Hotjar: opt out via Hotjar’s opt-out page
Who do we share information with?
From time to time we may share your information with TechEquity Action, an unaffiliated third-party 501(c)(4) California nonprofit corporation. We also will share the information of individual event participants with third-party nonprofit co-sponsors of those events. We do not sell your Personal Information as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act. We do not share your Personal Information with other unaffiliated third parties for their own marketing purposes without your prior consent. This does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving our users, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release information when its release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect our or others’ rights, property or safety. If you wish to opt out of any sharing of your information with TechEquity Action or event co-sponsors, you may do so by contacting us at info@techequity.us.
We may provide aggregated, de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify any individual to other parties for analytics, marketing, advertising, or other uses. Such de-identified data is generally not considered Personal Information under privacy law, including the California Consumer Privacy Act.
Third-party links
From time to time, we may link to third-party products or services on our website. These third-party sites have separate and independent privacy policies. We therefore have no responsibility or liability for the content and activities of these linked sites. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and welcome any feedback about these sites.
We use Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Google reCAPTCHA on the Site. The first two help us understand how visitors use the Site; reCAPTCHA helps keep spam and bots out of our forms and shares some visitor information with Google to do so. Google may use this data consistent with its own privacy policy and Google Advertising Principles.
Opting out
You can review Google’s practices and opt-out options through Google’s Ad Settings page and the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA)
CIPA restricts the use of certain technologies to record, intercept, or monitor electronic communications without consent. By using the Site, you consent to our use of the cookies, pixels, and other tracking technologies described above— including tools like Hotjar that may record or replay how visitors interact with pages on the Site—for the purposes described in this policy. If you’d rather not be part of this, you can adjust your cookie settings as described above or stop using the Site.
California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA)
CalOPPA is the first state law in the nation to require commercial websites and online services to post a privacy policy. The law’s reach stretches well beyond California to require any person or company in the United States (and conceivably the world) that operates websites collecting Personal Information from California consumers to post a conspicuous privacy policy on its website stating exactly the information being collected and those individuals or companies with whom it is being shared. See more at this link.
Consistent with CalOPPA:
- Users can browse the Site anonymously.
- We provide a link to this privacy policy on our home page or as a minimum, on the first significant page after entering our website.
- Our Privacy Policy link includes the word ‘Privacy’ and can easily be found on the page specified above.
- You will be notified of any Privacy Policy changes on our Privacy Policy Page. You can change your personal information by logging in to your account.
- This privacy policy was last updated on the date noted at the top of this policy. We will update this policy at least once every 12 months as required by the CCPA.
How does our Site handle Do Not Track signals?
We strive to honor Do Not Track signals. When a Do Not Track (DNT) browser mechanism is in place, we will limit our own data collection practices; however, the third-party services described in this policy may still use cookies and tracking technologies subject to their own privacy policies. Users may opt out of such third-party tracking as described in the “Opting out” section below.
Does our Site allow third-party behavioral tracking?
Yes. As described above, tools like the Meta Pixel and LinkedIn Insight Tag help us measure and improve our advertising.
COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act)
The Federal Trade Commission, the United States’ consumer protection agency, enforces the COPPA Rule, which spells out what operators of websites and online services must do to protect children’s privacy and safety online.
Our Site isn’t directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect Personal Information from children under the age of 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete such information as soon as practicable. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at info@techequity.us.
Fair Information Practices
The Fair Information Practices Principles form the backbone of privacy law in the United States and the concepts they include have played a significant role in the development of data protection laws around the globe. Understanding the Fair Information Practice Principles and how they should be implemented is critical to complying with the various privacy laws that protect personal information.
In order to be in line with Fair Information Practices we will take the following responsive action: should a data breach occur, we will notify you via email within 7 business days in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, consistent with the legitimate needs of law enforcement and any measures necessary to determine the scope of the breach and restore the reasonable integrity of the data system.
We also agree to the Individual Redress Principle which requires that individuals have the right to legally pursue enforceable rights against data collectors and processors who fail to adhere to the law. This principle requires not only that individuals have enforceable rights against data users, but also that individuals have recourse to courts or government agencies to investigate and/or prosecute non-compliance by data processors. In accordance with the CCPA, we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights, including by denying goods or services, charging different prices or rates, or providing a different level or quality of goods or services.
California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA)
If you’re a California resident, you have certain rights under the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA — including the right to know what personal information we’ve collected about you, to ask us to delete or correct it, to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.
We do not sell your personal information for money. However, our use of advertising technologies such as the Meta (Facebook) Pixel and LinkedIn Insight Tag may constitute “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under the CPRA.
CAN-SPAM Act
The CAN-SPAM Act is a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have emails stopped from being sent to them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.
We collect your email address to:
- Send information, respond to your questions, or follow up on other requests
- Send you updates about our events, campaigns, and advocacy work
- Share additional information related to programs or services you’ve asked about
- Keep in touch for as long as you’re subscribed to our mailing list
To be in accordance with CAN-SPAM, we agree to the following:
- Not using false or misleading subject lines or sender information
- Identifying the message as an advertisement where that applies
- Including our business’s physical address
- Keeping an eye on any third-party email marketing service we use to make sure it’s compliant
- Honoring opt-out/unsubscribe requests promptly
- Including an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email
If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future marketing and promotional emails, you can email us at info@techequity.us and we will promptly remove you from our marketing mailing list. Please note that you may still receive transactional or account-related communications.
