AB 1857 Grocery Store Access Act
Grocery Store Access Act would bar restrictive covenants—provisions in deeds or contracts that limit how a property can be used—for grocery stores. Restrictive covenants often prevent new grocery stores from opening in otherwise suitable commercial spaces, such as those formerly occupied by another grocery operator that has closed. The use of restrictive covenants drives out competitors who could serve a community, forcing customers to commute or go without when trying to access groceries.
