Case study overview
The problem
The Consumer Product Safety Commission maintains over 500,000 recall records, but their official search tools are difficult to navigate and most residents don't know the database exists. A parent who bought a recalled infant product three months ago has no easy way to find out.
The approach
A clean search interface over the federal recall API with filtering by hazard type, product category, and date range. Built with full keyboard navigation and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, because accessibility standards exist for a reason — especially on public health tools.
Why it matters
Federal agencies publish this data for a reason. Making it fast and usable for residents doesn't require a procurement contract; it requires understanding what the data contains and knowing how to present it clearly. This is the pattern for accessible open government data.
