I knew how to talk when I joined the station, like most 6-year-olds do, but in my time at the station, I learned to speak.

Become a Programmer

One of the most popular ways to get involved with KZFR is to become an on-air programmer. As an educational organization, KZFR offers a comprehensive training in the historical, legal, and technical aspects of non-commercial radio broadcasting. At the successful completion of this Programmer Training, one may substitute host existing programs, or submit a Program Proposal to create a new program. First step is to attend one of our Orientations which happen quarterly. More details & a Orientation registration form can be found by clicking here.

  1. New Programmer Orientation

Our New Programmer Orientations are held quarterly at the KZFR studios.

  2. Apply For A Program

KZFR's Program Committee is tasked with the selection and evaluation of KZFR programs.

  3. Technical Orientation

After your program application has been approved but before you begin broadcasting live on-air, you will be trained one-on-one with a staff member to use the tools and technology of broadcasting.

  4. Apprenticeship or 'Shadowing'

Armed with the basics of broadcasting, programmers-in-training now spend time in the studio with existing programmers, observing and getting hands-on with the equipment.

  5. Programmer Certification Test

The final stage of Programmer Training is a practical exam.
