West Chester Township Works to Improve School Zone Safety

In recent years, our community has suffered several tragic accidents involving pedestrians in school zones, which has highlighted the need for stronger safety measures.

In partnership with Lakota Local Schools, the Butler County Engineer's Office (BCEO), and other agencies, West Chester Township has taken action to improve student safety at Lakota West High School.

Physical Safety Upgrades

To make crossings more visible and secure, BCEO implemented several improvements:

Bump-out sidewalks at the crosswalk to bring pedestrians closer to traffic lanes

Pedestrian signs repositioned closer to the roadway for better driver awareness

Crosswalk ahead signs with LED indicators that sync with flashing crosswalk lights

Crosswalks repainted with reflective paint for higher visibility in low-light conditions

Permanent speed display signs installed to remind drivers of their speed

Police Enforcement

The West Chester Police Department continues to play a central role in protecting students:

Ongoing traffic enforcement to reduce speeding and distracted driving

Crossing guard officer assignment during the 2024-2025 school year

Speed limit reduction on West Chester Road, lowered from 40 mph to 35 mph during non-school hours

Education and Awareness

Safety education efforts complement the physical and enforcement measures:

Student-focused safety video created by Lakota Local Schools

Voluntary after-school presentations led by School Resource Officers

Posters, handouts, and social media reminders to reinforce safe behaviors

By combining infrastructure improvements, enforcement, and education, West Chester Township and its partners are working to ensure safer travel for students and motorist.

Public Safety Reminder

Drivers should slow down, avoid distractions, and stay alert for pedestrians, especially during early morning and afternoon hours.

Pedestrians should remove headphones and avoid cell phone use while walking, make eye contact with drivers, and look both ways before entering a crosswalk.

Everyone has a role to play in school zone safety. A little extra awareness can prevent tragedies.
