A young man is being lauded a hero after his quick thinking and calm action preserved life and property in West Chester Township.
Joe Mansour undoubtedly saved his family and home from any injuries or extensive damage, fire officials said, by putting out a fire in the basement of his West Chester home in March 2022. His actions included using a fire extinguisher in the home and extinguishing the fire before West Chester Fire Department crews arrived on scene.
Officials with the West Chester Fire Department recognized Joe and his courageous efforts by bestowing him the Fire Chief Award and a Challenge Coin outside Fire Station 74 earlier this week.
Like smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, portable fire extinguishers are good home fire safety tools when regular maintenance checks are performed to ensure equipment is in proper working order. Fire extinguishers are most effective when used to put out small, confined fires with minimal smoke. Call 911 and deploy a fire extinguisher after everyone has exited the building.
West Chester Fire Department offers public education programs, including basic fire extinguisher training, for every age group. Programs can be customized to meet individualized needs. Find more information about Public Education Programs online and call 513-777-1133 to schedule a program.
