Tech Worker Rights: Know Your Data Rights in California

This event took place on January 30, 2025.

Employers are notorious for collecting data about workers without much transparency about what is collected and how this information is used. Workers and researchers have highlighted examples of how data collected by employers could impact access to work; wages and benefits; health and safety; discipline and retaliation; and so much more. Do companies sell data to the highest bidder? Is collected data being used to train workplace algorithms, or something worse?

The introduction of the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2023 paved the way for everyday people to gain basic data rights and request collected information from companies – from employment to housing to the consumer market. So, what data rights do you have in California? Do you want to learn more about how you can find out what data companies collect about you?

Join TechEquity and the UC Berkeley Labor Center on Thursday, January 30th, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm PST for an informational session on how to exercise your data rights in California! The webinar will be moderated by Tim Newman, SVP of Labor Programs. Panelists include:

About our speakers:

Kung Feng

Kung Feng is a senior researcher at the UC Berkeley Labor Center, Technology and Work Program. His work includes understanding the implications of the California Consumer Privacy Act for workers. Previous to joining the Labor Center, Kung Feng was the executive director of Jobs with Justice San Francisco, a labor community alliance organizing around worker power, housing rights and climate justice. His contributions to the labor movement span decades as a rank and file activist and as a union organizer. He has a Masters in Public Policy from UC Berkeley.

Jason Munderloh

Jason Munderloh has been working as an app-based driver for ten years, and as a member and leader of GWR
for five years. He joined GWR because he wanted to be part of a workers’ organization that could make change on
a level that was only possible with many app-based drivers working together. One of the things Jason most enjoys
about GWR is the chance to meet and get to know other drivers and to join with them in a common fight.

Jason has also been active in the ecological forestry movement, including in efforts that use biochar to enrich soil, capture carbon, prevent wildfires, and combat climate change.
