Jonathan Mehta Stein

Jonathan Mehta Stein is the Managing Director at TechEquity, where he fights for a future in which all of us get to shape technology’s influence over our communities, our workforce, and our democracy. A longtime voting rights attorney and democracy reform advocate, Jonathan was formerly the Executive Director of California Common Cause, California’s foremost nonprofit organization working to build a stronger, more inclusive democracy. During his tenure, Jonathan led the organization’s work on expanding voting rights, reforming redistricting, countering big money in politics, and supporting local journalism; he also started the California Initiative for Technology and Democracy (CITED), which advocates for solutions to the threats that AI and social media pose to our elections and our democracy.

Previously, Jonathan served as the head of the Voting Rights & Census Program at the civil rights organization Asian Law Caucus, as a voting rights staff attorney for the ACLU of California, and as the Chair of the Oakland Public Ethics Commission. While receiving his MPP and JD from UC Berkeley, Jonathan served as the Student Regent on the University of California’s Board of Regents, where he advocated for the interests of the 230,000 students of the UC system. Prior to graduate school, Jonathan spent four years at Mother Jones magazine as a researcher, assistant editor, and campaign correspondent during the 2008 presidential elections. Jonathan is now based in Atlanta, GA.
