Accessibility

Built for every South Carolinian

A public school's website is itself a public building. This prototype is built so that students, families, and educators using assistive technology get the same site as everyone else, not a side door.

The standard this prototype meets

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance target, machine-checked with axe‑core and verified by hand with keyboard and screen reader
  • Semantic landmarks on every page: banner, navigation, main, contentinfo
  • A skip link, visible focus indicators, and touch targets of at least 24 pixels
  • Color contrast at or above 4.5:1 for body text, in both light sections and the navy bands
  • All images carry text alternatives; decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology
  • Pages work at 200% zoom and on a 375 pixel-wide phone with no horizontal scrolling

In production

The same gate applies to content, not just templates: the CMS this concept proposes checks headings, link text, and image alternatives as editors write, so accessibility holds long after launch day. See it working in the staff CMS demo.
