Fiber-optic internet service is expanding throughout the Village of Schaumburg as multiple providers construct new fiber-to-the-home networks to meet the growing demand for reliable, high-speed internet. Residents may see construction crews working in neighborhoods as providers install underground fiber infrastructure within the public rights-of-way. While the village oversees the use of its rights-of-way and ensures providers comply with construction, restoration, and permitting requirements, the providers are responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of their networks.
For the fastest resolution of questions or service issues, residents should contact their fiber provider directly. Providers are best equipped to address construction schedules, installation questions, service availability, outages, billing, and restoration concerns. If you have made reasonable efforts to resolve an issue with your provider and it remains unresolved, the village may be able to assist by escalating the matter to the appropriate company. For assistance with unresolved issues, please call the village at (847) 923-4702.
The information below provides answers to frequently asked questions about fiber construction and lists the providers currently authorized to construct fiber-optic infrastructure within the Village's public rights-of-way.
What is “Fiber Internet”?
Fiber internet is a type of high-speed internet service that uses thin strands of glass or plastic to transmit data using light instead of electrical signals. This allows for faster speeds, greater reliability, and better performance than traditional cable internet.
Why are fiber construction crews working in my neighborhood?
Demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, resulting in both new fiber providers entering the market and existing internet and cable providers upgrading their networks to remain competitive. As a result, residents may see construction activity in their neighborhoods even if they have not subscribed to fiber service.
Do I have to sign up for fiber internet if work is taking place near my property?
No. Construction of the network does not require residents to purchase or subscribe to fiber service. The infrastructure is being installed to make service available as an option.
Are fiber companies allowed to work on or near my property?
Yes. Fiber providers may perform work within public rights-of-way and utility easements after obtaining the required permits. These areas are designated for utility infrastructure such as electric, gas, water, internet/telecommunications, and similar services.
What should I expect during construction?
Residents can expect to see crews locating underground utilities, installing underground fiber-optic cable, and placing neighborhood infrastructure, including flush-mounted access points (approximately every other home) and small service cabinets at select locations. Construction is temporary, with crews working in an area for only a short period of time while minimizing disruptions. After construction is complete, the only visible infrastructure will be the flush access points and occasional service cabinets, resulting in minimal long-term visual impact.
