Lake Township Park

Parks & Recreation Plan
The Lake Township Planning Commission prepared the Township's comprehensive Parks & Recreation Plan, approved by the Board on July 12, 2022.
Lake Township Cemetery
Open during daylight hours, April 1 through December 31.
Township Hall rentals
The Township Hall is currently not available for rentals. The Township purchased land in 2023 and is planning a new hall that can offer rentals to residents in the future.
On the calendar
Area events
The Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce maintains the community calendar for the area. Each January, the Chamber hosts Tip-Up Town USA, the area's winter ice-fishing carnival on the lake, named for the flag-like "tip-ups" anglers set over their holes in the ice.

A township shaped by the water
Lake Township sits on the western border of Roscommon County, named for its place on the shore of Houghton Lake, the largest inland lake in Michigan and the headwaters of the Muskegon River. The communities of Michelson (a railway station from 1904, grown around shingle and sawmills) and Nellsville (founded 1906, named for supervisor Edward Nelson), along with Houghton Point and Meads Landing, make up the Township.
The Houghton Lake Flats and Dead Stream floodings draw osprey, bald eagles, anglers, and birdwatchers. Locals call this shore the "Mediterranean of the North." It is a place of summer cottages and January ice, and the Township's job is to keep it running for everyone who calls it home—full time or for the season.
