2026

  1. Mount Rogers Water/Wastewater Funding Program

Your staff has received the application packets from the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission (MRPDC) for the FY 2027 funding cycle. As you’ll remember, the town has requested, and has been approved, for over $700,000 in grant funding that has allowed significant improvements to our water and wastewater systems. In the past two fiscal years, these grant funds have been used to make critical repairs to equipment at the wastewater treatment plant as well as the rehabilitation of one of the town’s five water tanks.

Our application this year will be for a rehabilitation project on our Shuler Hollow Water Tank, which has not had any major maintenance since it was placed in service over 30 years ago. Applications are due on October 16th.

  2. Mount Rogers Water/Wastewater Fund & Widener Tank Refurbishment

This $93,752 rehabilitation project is completed, the contractor (Mid-Atlantic) has been paid in full, and the town has received our grant funds from the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission to reimburse the town’s expenses in full.

Assuming that the General Assembly again funds this invaluable program, your staff will apply for funding next fiscal year in hopes of undertaking rehabilitation and renovation on more of our aging water tanks.

  1. Mount Rogers Water/Wastewater Fund & Widener Tank Refurbishment

Chilhowie’s funding application for $93,752 was submitted in August for the 2025 funding cycle of the Mount Rogers Water/Wastewater Program. Our request was approved, and the funds will be used for the refurbishment of the Widener Feed Tank. This project is the first extensive servicing of the water tank since at least 1998 and will hopefully help ensure many more years of service.

Mid Atlantic Storage Systems, Inc. has now completed their rehabilitation work and the tank is back online.

Project documentation and invoices have been sent to the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission (MRPDC) and we expect to receive reimbursement funds within the next two weeks.

Mid Atlantic Storage Systems, Inc. is the company completing the refurbishment. They are scheduled to begin within the next few days. The timeline for the project is slated to be three weeks.

I would like to commend the town staff for an absolutely amazing job of preparing our water system for this project. It’s extremely rare to take a water tank offline for such a lengthy period of time while still ensuring adequate flows and pressures. The hard work and conscientious planning undertaken by them is very much noticed by me and very much appreciated.
