  1. Bonham House Repairs and Renovations

A few months ago, I brought to your attention several maintenance issues and repairs needed at the Bonham House. To update you, the replacement of the rubberized roofing is now complete, and town staff has completed repairs to the extremely deteriorated stucco/concrete siding on the semi-rotunda above the building’s front door. This will hopefully take care of the water leak issues that have frustrated all parties involved for quite some time.

Additionally, two problematic leaks that have proven hard to locate in other areas of the roof has finally been tracked down and your town staff have re-sealed the areas which will hopefully rectify these leaks as well.

Also, town staff has made repairs to and repainted the support columns on the porch.

As you’re aware, over the past nine months, the town has replaced both outside HVAC units at the buildings as well as rebuilding a section of the front porch that had become rotted and unsafe. The staff has also repaired on several occasions the chairlift elevator on the side of the building.

Materials quotes have been collected by your town staff for the ADA-Compliant accessibility ramp that we intend to construct so that we can remove the increasingly problematic chair lift. Smyth County has expressed their willingness to share in these costs and I have reached out to the other two Smyth towns to request their financial assistance. I will update you when I hear back from them.

  2. Bonham House Repairs and Renovations

Two months ago, I brought to your attention that there are several maintenance issues and repairs needed at the Bonham House. To update you, the replacement of the rubberized roofing is now complete. The town staff is now working to repair the extremely deteriorated stucco/concrete siding on the semi-rotunda above the building’s front door. This step is proving to be more tedious than originally planned due to the age of the underlying materials and its curved surface. Once completed, this will hopefully completely take care of the water leak issues that have frustrated all parties involved for quite some time.

Additionally, a problematic leak that has proven hard to locate in another area of the roof has finally been tracked down and your Buildings and Grounds staff have re-sealed the area which will hopefully rectify this leak as well.

As you’re aware, over the past eight months, the town has replaced both outside HVAC units at the buildings as well as rebuilding a section of the front porch that had become rotted and unsafe. The staff has also repaired on several occasions the chairlift elevator on the side of the building.

Materials quotes have been collected by your town staff for the ADA-Compliant accessibility ramp that we intend to construct so that we can remove the increasingly problematic chair lift. Smyth County has expressed their willingness to share in these costs and I plan to approach the other two Smyth towns as well.

Two months ago, I brought to your attention that there are several maintenance issues and repairs needed at the Bonham House. To update you, the replacement of the rubberized roofing is now complete. The town staff will now replace the extremely deteriorated stucco/concrete siding on the semi-rotunda above the building’s front door. Hopefully this will completely take care of the water leak issues that have frustrated all parties involved for quite some time. I am hopeful that the siding repairs to finalize this project will occur in the next couple of weeks.

As you’re aware, over the past eight months, the town has replaced both outside HVAC units at the buildings as well as rebuilding a section of the front porch that had become rotted and unsafe. The staff has also repaired on several occasions the chairlift elevator on the side of the building.

As part of our upcoming budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27, I plan to budget funds for the construction of an ADA-compliant ramp that will replace the aging and increasing problematic chairlift elevator. As with the repairs at hand that we are addressing, I intend to request that the other Smyth localities provide a portion of the funding for this improvement project since the building serves as the tourism center for our entire county and considering how drastically maintenance costs have risen over the past five years.

  5. Bonham House Repairs and Renovations

Last month I brought to your attention that there are several maintenance issues and repairs needed at the Bonham House. To update you, I have approved a quote from a roofing contractor to replace the areas of the roof that are rubberized. These repairs will be undertaken in conjunction with the town staff’s removal and replacement of the stucco siding on the semi-rotunda above the building’s front door. It’s my hope that this work will address the leaks that have caused damage to the porch ceiling and flooring.

As you’re aware, over the past seven months, the town has replaced both outside HVAC units at the buildings as well as rebuilding a section of the front porch that had become rotted and unsafe. The staff has also repaired on several occasions the chairlift elevator on the side of the building.

  6. Bonham House Repairs and Renovations

There are several issues at the Bonham House that need to be addressed. Primarily, there are at least two areas of the roof that are leaking and causing damage to the ceilings and to the front porch. I have been on the roof of the building with Mr. Chris Johnson to personally see the issues at hand. On January 24th, I notified the staff and board members of the Smyth County Chamber of Commerce that the town is aware of these problems and intends to address them just as soon as we could turn away from the pressing town issues arising from the ice, snow, and prolonged cold temperatures. Now that your staff has some time to dedicate to these matters, I have drafted a list of the repairs needed and your staff is working with area contractors to solicit quotes. Once received, I will let you know how much funding we will be looking at. Additionally, once quotes are received, I plan to approach Smyth County and the other two Smyth towns to request their assistance in funding these repairs.
