Call for volunteers

CAMWSCorps was founded on the model of NPR's StoryCorps in 2012 to interview longtime members of the Association, focusing on their experiences at meetings and the value of CAMWS to their professional careers. Under the guidance of the History Committee, we have conducted 106 interviews and thereby compiled an oral history of our association, a unique living legacy of testimony that will be of great value to future historians of the field and the association. Our immediate need is for volunteers who are willing to edit the interviews which have been electronically transcribed to a 90% degree of accuracy. (The program has trouble detecting "CAMWS", for instance: one finds "cameras," "campus," and even "Kanye West."). Each file prints out to between 5 and 7 pages and requires a little over an hour to edit. To volunteer, please email CAMWS Historian Ward Briggs: wbriggs7@bellsouth.net. Many thanks from the CAMWS History Committee!

The Executive Committee approves the Anthony Fauci Award in STEM and Classics

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South announces the Anthony Fauci Award in STEM and Classics. This $500 annual award recognizes an undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding work in both Classics and a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

Undergraduates who are currently enrolled with Junior or Senior standing at universities and colleges in the USA and Canada may apply. The applicant must be a major in Classics or a STEM discipline and must have significant course work in the other field (e.g., a Classics major must demonstrate significant coursework in a STEM discipline such as Chemistry; or a Physics major must demonstrate significant coursework in Classics). Courses in Greek and Roman civilizations are certainly acceptable, but the strongest candidates will have demonstrated work in Greek and/or Latin.

The applicant must submit a 500-word essay on the topic of "How is your experience in Classics enhanced by studying a STEM subject and/or vice versa?" along with a current transcript (an unofficial copy will suffice) for all relevant undergraduate work, and one letter of recommendation from either a Classics or STEM professor. The annual deadline for receipt of applications is January 30. The recipient of the award will be announced at the annual CAMWS meeting. For further information about the award go to www.camws.org.

Anthony Fauci, an American physician, scientist and immunologist has served as the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and as the chief medical advisor to the U.S. President. As an undergraduate at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. from 1958-62, Dr. Fauci majored in Classics with a pre-medical track.

The deadline has since moved: applications now must arrive before January 15. The Fauci Award page has the current deadline.

Statements

The CAMWS Statement Supporting Diversity and Opposing Violence and Discrimination

The Classical Association of the Middle West and South decries all forms of hate, discrimination, racism, bigotry, and xenophobia. We affirm that all people deserve to be treated with equal compassion, dignity, and respect. Our commitment to the liberal arts impels us to resist violence and hatred, whether perpetrated through word, symbol, or deed: diversity is a resource that strengthens and benefits our entire community, be it diversity of ability, age, ethnicity, gender identity, nationality, political thought, race, religion, sexuality, socioeconomic status, veteran status or culture. We unequivocally stand with our colleagues, students, families, and friends to support and celebrate all ways to be human.
