Ohio Mobile ID not a replacement for your driver’s license

Think you’ll never need to carry your official Ohio-issued driver's license card now that there’s a copy on your smartphone? Think again.

In summer 2024, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor John Husted announced Ohioans now have the option to voluntarily add their state ID to their mobile devices. The Ohio Mobile ID is compatible with iPhone and Apple Watch through Apple Wallet, available on the App Store.

Your digital copy functions much like the real thing. But it’s not a direct substitute.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles website explains how the Ohio Mobile ID provides a safe, convenient way to confirm your identification in person, like when shopping at certain businesses or dining at certain restaurants, and online when making digital purchases that require age verification.

“The Ohio Mobile ID provides a reliable alternative to physical cards, streamlining verification processes and improving customer privacy and experience,” according to the Ohio BMV website.

It’s even good at select TSA airports.

Local law enforcement agencies, however, discourage citizens from leaving home without an actual ID card. Especially if you’re traveling.

Why? Even though it works about the same in nearly all respects, Ohio Mobile ID in your Apple Wallet isn’t a true replacement of the physical card in your real wallet.

The Ohio BMV website plainly states, “No, Ohio Mobile ID does not replace your physical Ohio driver's license or identification card and you must continue to carry your physical card.”

Why not? Traffic stops are one example why you’ll want to have your actual, plastic Ohio driver’s license ready.

In the unfortunate circumstance a police officer must seize your ID, like instances when operating a motor vehicle under the influence is suspected, an Ohio Mobile ID won’t cut it. Without a state-issued ID card, you could face additional penalties for not handing over proper identification given the scenario.

The West Chester Police Department always recommends playing it safe. If you choose to use Ohio Mobile ID, continue to carry your actual ID with your phone, keys and other personal items as you normally would. That goes double if you’re jumping in driver’s seat.
