Theft from auto in the parks

Police are encouraging residents to secure vehicles at all times and remove valuables following several recent incidents of theft from automobiles in the parks.

Theft from autos is a common neighborhood crime. Criminals look for signs and will take advantage at a moment's notice.

Stealing from unattended cars falls under the category of "crimes of opportunity." Criminals find that unlocked vehicles make for easy targets. It makes no difference to the bad guys whether you are parked in a public place, at home on your driveway or inside your own garage.

The vehicle itself can be easily stolen if the keys are carelessly left nearby, or worse, switched on in the ignition.

Vehicle Theft Prevention

Try these four ways to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of theft from auto.

Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. If necessary, stow items in your trunk and completely out of sight. Covering purses, wallets, laptops or cell phones will not cut it. Take these items with you when you go.

Get the firearms out, too. Guns are one of the first things criminals look for when ransacking an unsecured vehicle.

Absolutely never leave your car running if you’re not there with it, and never leave the keys in the car. Just don’t do it.

Always lock doors to your vehicle, no matter where it is parked, and close windows. Try to park in a well-lighted area whenever possible and shut garage doors, even when you are home.
