A grant award targeted to reduce fatal crashes, reduce fatal and serious alcohol-related traffic crashes and to increase safety belt usage will help West Chester focus efforts on traffic enforcement during the summer months.
The West Chester Police Department received 100 hours of traffic enforcement through an Ohio Traffic Safety Office, an award of $6,422.23.
“Traffic safety is a priority all year long, but during the summer months when there are more celebrations and more people on the road this grant comes at the perfect time,” said Police Chief Joel Herzog.
The Federal Highway Safety Act of 1966 directed the U.S. Department of Transportation to administer various highway safety programs. This grant program provides federal funds administered through the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) to eligible agencies to be used for projects such as traffic safety education, enforcement and engineering
The grant program allows for enforcement time for at least one summertime event and encompasses the following time periods:
Distracted driving month: April 1-30th
Annual Click It or Ticket Blitz: May 23rd – June 5th
Independence Day Holiday: July 1-5
Annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign: August 19th- September 5th
