Board of Commissioners Adopts Resolution to Recognize Emergency Telecommunicators as First Responders

Sevier County, Tennessee (October 22, 2024) – The Sevier County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt Resolution 2024-10-07 at their meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2024. The resolution officially recognizes Sevier County's Emergency Telecommunicators, including Central Communications Dispatchers and Sevier County Sheriff’s Office Dispatchers, as First Responders.

Sevier County Emergency Telecommunicators are a critical part of the public safety infrastructure, serving as the first point of contact for individuals needing law enforcement, fire, or medical assistance. They play a vital role in gathering and relaying information, ensuring emergency responders receive crucial details to manage incidents effectively.

Director of Sevier County Central Dispatch E911 Andrew Whaley, expressed his appreciation for adopting the resolution: “Our dispatchers are the first line of defense in any emergency, providing life-saving assistance over the phone and ensuring responders have the information they need. They manage high-stress situations with calm and professionalism, guiding citizens and coordinating responders. This designation as First Responders is long overdue, and I’m proud that Sevier County has taken this step.”

Sevier County Sheriff Michael Hodges added “I would like to thank the Sevier County Commission for passing the resolution to recognize our emergency dispatchers as First Responders. These men and women serve as the unsung heroes of our profession. They try to bring order to often chaotic and volatile situations and are very deserving of this recognition. As Sheriff, I greatly appreciate the outstanding service our telecommunicators provide to the citizens of Sevier County.”

The resolution also urges the Tennessee General Assembly and the United States Congress to officially recognize telecommunicators across the State of Tennessee and the United States of America as First Responders, entitling them to the same benefits provided to other public safety personnel.
