In-home care

Help around the house while you recover, or stay independent longer.

Several programs bring help directly into a senior's home, from short-term care after an illness to a fan or air conditioner in the heat of summer.

What's included

  • Homemaker Program

Light housekeeping and meal preparation in the home while recovering from an illness, arranged through a licensed home health agency. Free at or below the federal poverty level; a sliding fee scale applies above it.

  • Personal Care

In-home help with bathing, feeding, and other self-care tasks during recovery, arranged the same way as the Homemaker Program, with the same income-based fee scale.

  • Options Counseling

A free, in-home assessment from an options counselor, who works with a senior and their family to sort out which services actually fit the situation.

  • Care Transitions

A coach who helps seniors 60 and older manage medications and avoid a hospital readmission after a stay at a Sentara hospital, connected through the hospital's own care team.

  • Senior Cool Care

Free window air conditioners or fans for income-eligible seniors 60 and older, funded by Dominion Energy, available May through October while funding lasts.

  • Homeless Older Adults Program

Outreach and support for older adults experiencing homelessness, including help with housing options, landlord mediation, identification, transportation, and benefits.

  • No Wrong Door

A statewide Virginia network that helps connect any caller to the right long-term services and supports, no matter which door they first knock on.
