Halhata na Thathanka / Magpie and Buffalo , written and illustrated by Lakota author and artist Alfreda Beartrack Algeo, is the perfect introduction for young children to the important roles the American bison (commonly known as the American buffalo) has played in Lakota culture. With translations by Violet Catches, this board book also serves as a beginner's tool for learning Lakota terminology.

Read along as Magpie (Halhata) teaches readers all the important ways Buffalo (Thathanka) has helped the Lakota people throughout history, providing them with food, clothing, and materials for their ceremonies.

Alfreda Beartrack Algeo is from the Khul Wichasha Oyate, Ocheti Shakowin Lower Brule Lakhota Tribe in South Dakota, where she was born and raised. She now makes her home in Palisade, Colorado.

As an artist, she creates many types of art but is most fond of writing and illustrating children’s books. When she is not busy in her art studio, she can be found tending her backyard farm or spending time in South Dakota with her Khul Wichasha Oyate and community.
