FROM:
Mark OndersmaDirector of Public Works
MEETING DATE:
September 9, 2026
SUBJECT:
AED Placement at Mt. Baldhead
DESCRIPTION: The Saugatuck-Douglas HeartSafe Initiative has requested approval to install a publicly accessible AED at the base of Mt. Baldhead. The proposed AED would be housed in an outdoor Aivia cabinet and available to the public 24 hours a day. The Saugatuck-Douglas HeartSafe Initiative will be responsible for the installation, inspections, monitoring, battery and pad replacement, and long-term maintenance of the AED. The City will be responsible for the monthly electrical cost associated with operating the unit, estimated at approximately $5 per month. Due to the high volume of residents and visitors using Mt. Baldhead stairs and surrounding area, staff support the placement of an AED at this location on the side of the restrooms facing the steps up to Mt. Baldhead as an additional public safety resource. BUDGET ACTION REQUIRED: N/A COMMITTEE/COMMISSION REVIEW: Parks & Public Works Committee reviewed the plan and recommended the plan & location. LEGAL REVIEW: Legal has reviewed the partnership agreement and is comfortable with it. SAMPLE MOTION: Motion to approve the placement of a publicly accessible AED at the base of Mt. Baldhead on the restrooms in partnership with the Saugatuck-Douglas HeartSafe Initiative.
