Dear Members of the City Council, City Manager, and Public Works Director, I am writing again as a resident of Park Street near Mt. Baldy regarding the serious condition of our roadway at the Mt Baldy Park. I have spoken directly with the City Manager and understand that a larger reconstruction project for this area is on the City’s agenda, but that it may be two years out. While I appreciate that the City recognizes the need for improvement, waiting two more years without meaningful intervention poses continued safety risks and ongoing damage to the surrounding homes and automobiles traveling in and through the Park area. This stretch of Park Street serves as the primary access to Mt. Baldy, one of Saugatuck’s most visited attractions. During the spring, summer and fall months, thousands of visitors travel this road to climb the 303 steps and enjoy the view of Lake Michigan. The pavement has deteriorated significantly, creating hazards for vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and residents. Temporary pothole patching has not held up under the volume of traffic and seasonal wear. If a full reconstruction must wait, I respectfully request that the City consider implementing a temporary but more substantial solution in the interim — such as milling and asphalt overlay or another short-term resurfacing approach. A temporary milling and overlay would greatly improve safety, reduce vehicle damage, and reflect the level of care our community expects, while long-term plans are being quoted, engineered, and finalized. 1

The residents along this stretch — roughly 25 homes — pay substantial property taxes and take pride in maintaining our properties. We simply ask that the roadway serving both our homes and one of the City’s most visible park be made safe and presentable. I respectfully request: • Clarification on the anticipated timeline for the full reconstruction project • Consideration of a temporary milling and asphalt overlay solution • A review of whether this section can be prioritized due to its heavy seasonal traffic and public visibility We all value Saugatuck’s charm and reputation. Addressing this issue, even temporarily, would demonstrate responsiveness to both residents and the many visitors who experience this area each year. Thank you for your continued attention. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further or attend a council meeting to speak on behalf of the neighborhood. Sincerely, Renee Zita Park Street Resident Saugatuck, Michigan
