The five MEPs from the ECON Committee participated in a far-reaching, interactive, discussion with our corporate council members On October 14 2022, the Meridian Corporate Council partnered with 3M to host five members of the European Parliament, Committee on Economic & Monetary Affairs for a discussion on the U.S. – E.U. economic relationship and luncheon with members of the corporate council. The conversation was moderated by Puru Trivedi, Vice President, External & Corporate Affairs, Meridian International Center.

The Parliamentary Group included: Irene Tinagli, ECON Chair, (S&D Group, Italy) Luděk Niedermayer, ECON Vice-Chair (EPP group, Czech Republic) Michiel Hoogeveen, ECON Vice-Chair, (ECR Group, Netherlands) Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou, (EPP Group, Greece) Enikö Györi, (Non-attached Member, Hungary) The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) is a committee of the European Parliament which is responsible for the regulation of financial services, the free movement of capital and payments, taxation and competition policies, oversight of the European Central Bank, and the international financial system.

The Parliamentarians were welcomed to the U.S. to take part in an exciting conversation regarding factors shaping progress between the most interwoven economies in the world. The session began with an overview of the U.S. – EU role and partnership in the Russia-Ukraine war, and the conflict’s projected impact on the European economy. The conversation then shifted towards the future of energy in Europe and the scale of U.S. involvement in mitigating rising energy costs with the hope of curtailing the current economic forecast.

The committee members then moved to discuss the future of global trade regulation and best practices for promoting free trade agreements. Corporate representatives had the chance to discuss both their domestic outlook and plans for involvement in Europe under strong transatlantic trade and governing relationships. As sustainable energy continues to play a role in shaping energy consumption, the group discussed the cost of transitioning to clean energy and what this transition will mean for businesses and families, as well as what energy ministers are doing in Europe to form a unilateral approach to reshaping the energy market.
