Legislation and Regulation for the Digital Age – A Project for Brazil
Legislation and Regulation for the Digital Age IVLP participants take a group photo at Facebook's Offices in Washington, DC On March 10, Meridian welcomed six Brazilian participants for the three-week long 'Legislation and Regulation for the Digital Age' International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). Made up of legislators, lawyers, and non-profit managers, the group traveled to the United States to enhance their understanding of U.S. foreign policy objectives regarding internet freedom; assess efforts and legal foundations necessary to counter cyber crime; and study the intersection of online freedoms, privacy protections, and security imperatives.
Through their program, the participants accomplished these objectives through meetings with keynote legislators, think tank organizations, and non-governmental institutions in cities including Washington, DC; San Francisco, CA; New Orleans, LA; Cincinnati, OH; and New York, NY. While in Washington, DC, the participants had the opportunity to discuss trends privacy issues in social media with representatives from Facebook; gain Congressional perspectives on governance, privacy and neutrality from the Legislative Director for Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D, CA - 18th); and learn about advocacy on behalf of an open internet with experts from the Internet Association .
Other highlights included engagements with OpenGov Hub , the Center for Information Policy Leadership , and the Technology Policy Institute . Participants also had an engaging opportunity to participate in the Sustainable Development Goals National Reporting Initiative Launch before continuing their national program.
