Mr. Lyu Jiang, Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs, Embassy of The People's Republic of China, Ms. Deborah Lehr, Member of the Meridian Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman and Puru Trivedi, Vice President - External & Corporate Affairs, Meridian lead the briefing. On September 6, 2023, the Meridian Corporate Council hosted a Global Business Briefing with Mr. Lyu Jiang, Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs, Embassy of The People's Republic of China.
The discussion, moderated by Ms. Deborah Lehr, Member of the Meridian Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman and Executive Director, covered the future of China-U.S. relations and how the private sector can help promote stronger bilateral relations between China and the United States. About Lyu Jiang Mr. Lyu Jiang is the Minister at the Economic and Commercial Office of the Chinese Embassy in the United States. Before that, he had been Deputy Director-General of Trade Remedy Investigation Bureau (TRIB) of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) of China since 2016.
Mr. Lyu joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in 1995 and spent his first eight years as a translator and interpreter. He was appointed Deputy Director with Bureau of Fair Trade in MOFCOM in 2003 and then worked as the Deputy Director in the Office for International Trade Negotiations within MOFCOM. From 2008 to 2016, Mr. Lyu worked with the Anti-monopoly Bureau of MOFCOM as Deputy Director and then Director.
Mr. Lyu graduated from the English Department of China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) with a BA and has a master's degree in international law from University of Sydney Law School Here are some takeaways from the program: A part of the Global Business Briefing series, “Harmony in Trade: Unraveling U.S.- China Economic Ties” continued building on the conversation produced from Secretary Raimondo’s trip to Beijing. It is no secret that economic and security relations between the United States and China have become increasingly complex and pivotal in the global landscape.
While the choice between cooperation and competition has been the dominant paradigm that animates the relationship between the United States and China, there still remains a strong trade relationship between the two nations. With such a high interdependence of the U.S. and Chinese economies, a purely adversarial approach does not seem to serve the broader interests of either nation. Clear lines of communication in upcoming multilaterals like APEC, UNGA, and COP will be integral to cooperation and collaboration in stabilizing the most consequential relationship in the world.
