A neutral broker for the Chesapeake
Maryland Sea Grant connects science with the people who manage, conserve, enjoy, and make their living from the Bay.
Our mission
Turning Bay science into things people can use.
Maryland Sea Grant is a university-based partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), administered by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and part of the University System of Maryland. Since 1977, we have served as a bridge between scientific expertise and the needs of people across the Chesapeake region.
Our work combines research, education, and public outreach. Guided by our strategic plan, we develop sound ideas and practices that can enhance the Bay's ecology as well as the businesses and jobs that rely on it. Working with many partners, we act as a neutral broker, spreading science-based, useful, unbiased solutions to a wide audience.
What we do
- Fund research. We support scientists studying the Chesapeake, oysters, blue crabs, fisheries, water quality, submerged grasses, aquaculture, and more.
- Train people. Knauss policy fellowships, graduate research fellowships, and the REU undergraduate program build the next generation of Bay scientists and leaders.
- Extend knowledge. Our extension and outreach connect watermen, growers, managers, and teachers with practical science, from seafood safety to aquaculture.
- Tell the story. Chesapeake Quarterly, our blogs, and our publications make Bay science readable and findable for everyone.
