The City adopted the Envision Edgerton 2050 Comprehensive Plan on April 11, 2024. It was updated on August 14, 2025.

A Comprehensive Plan is a document designed to be the guideline for the future growth and actions of a community. It presents a vision for the future with long-range goals, policies, and action items for all activities that affect the community.

City staff worked closely with the consultant, Confluence, Inc., to collect information and feedback from the residents to use their ideas to structure the plan. The input received from the community was used to identify the four major pillars of the Envision Edgerton 2050 Comprehensive Plan, which include the following:

  1. Downtown Edgerton
  2. Housing Diversity
  3. Business Growth
  4. Community Facilities & Infrastructure

Ultimately, staff, the consultant, and the Steering Committee worked to create a list of Goals, Policies, and Action Items for the City to consider when making decisions. The Goals, Policies, and Action Items are located at the end of their respective Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan, as well as a comprehensive list provided at the end of Chapter 7.

What is a Comprehensive Plan?

A Comprehensive Plan is the adopted official statement of a legislative body of a local government that sets forth goals, policies, and guidelines intended to direct present and future physical, social, and economic development that occurs within its planning jurisdiction. A Comprehensive Plan is a guiding document and is not legally binding.

Can a Comprehensive Plan be changed?

Yes, Comprehensive Plans can be modified as a result of conditions that occur over time. Additionally, the State of Kansas requires cities to review Comprehensive Plans on an annual basis and allows them to modify Comprehensive Plans as they see fit.

My property is included on the Future Land Use Map. Does this mean the City is going to build something on my property?

No. The Future Land Use Map is a depiction of how the City sees itself growing. Only property owners or their authorized representatives may submit applications to develop their property.

The Future Land Use Map covers a lot of area. Does this mean the City will be that big by 2050?

No. This map indicates what the City believes the property should develop as, if the property owner chooses to develop during this time frame.
