Initiatives and programs

At ADI, we place the lived experiences of community members at the heart of our work, believing that communities should lead and shape the pursuit of transformational justice in the Adirondack Park and beyond. Our programming, outreach, and advocacy primarily concentrate on three areas: Safety & Belonging, Nature Stewardship and Community Building.

Safety & Belonging

Training for police and schools, conversations for workplaces, and retreats where leaders of color and LGBTQIA+ leaders can rest.

  • Safety & Belonging

    Community Policing Initiative

The goal of our Community Policing initiative is to enhance the relationship between police agencies and the Adirondack communities they serve.

  • Safety & Belonging

    Cultural Consciousness Building

It’s not diversity training! Our Cultural Consciousness Building is facilitated as active conversations, rooted in education, and tailored to meet the specific needs of the community, organization, or business that initiated our services.

  • Safety & Belonging

    Welcoming & Belonging Micro-Credential Course

Our Welcoming & Belonging Micro-credential Course offers local businesses, chambers of commerce, and community groups essential knowledge and best practices for creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for all staff and clientele.

  • Safety & Belonging

    Schoolyard Response Toolkit

Resources to help teachers, schools, caregivers & families, and community members respond swiftly and compassionately when a child is targeted.

  • Safety & Belonging

    Sustaining BIPOC Leadership Initiative

This program aligns with our mission to support racial, social, and economic justice by empowering those who aspire to lead within their communities.

Nature Stewardship

Scholarships, spring breaks, birding days and first trips outdoors, so more people know the Adirondacks as theirs to explore and protect.

  • Nature Stewardship

    Emerging Stewards Initiative

The Emerging Stewards Initiative aims to develop new generations of Adirondack stewards from marginalized communities throughout New York State.

  • Nature Stewardship

    Visitor Use Management Initiative

Making sure the High Peaks Visitor Use Management plan protects people as well as places, and asks why some people never visit.

  • Nature Stewardship

    Land Trust Alliance Initiative

Partnering with land trusts so more people from diverse backgrounds experience and benefit from the natural world.

  • Nature Stewardship

    ADK Black Birders

A day of birding at John Brown Farm in Lake Placid to build community, deepen our connection to the land, and celebrate Black birders.

Community Building

The symposium, speakers, listening sessions, art, and the celebrations that bring the North Country together.

  • Community Building
