About Tontitown

Tontitown was founded in 1898 by about forty Italian Catholic families, led by Father Pietro Bandini, who came to the Ozarks to farm and grow grapes after leaving the Sunnyside colony in southeast Arkansas. The town was named for the explorer Henri de Tonti, and it was formally incorporated in 1909.

More than a century later, Tontitown is one of the fastest-growing cities in Northwest Arkansas. Its population grew from 942 in 2000 to 2,460 in 2010 and 4,301 in the 2020 Census. Through all that change, the City's Italian heritage endures, most visibly in the annual Tontitown Grape Festival each August, believed to be the longest-running annual community event in Arkansas.
