County Earns Third Consecutive Clean Audit from State Comptroller

Sevier County, Tennessee (May 22, 2025) – Sevier County has received a clean audit from the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury for fiscal year 2024, marking the County’s third consecutive year with no audit findings and its fourth clean audit in the last seven years. This achievement places Sevier County among a select group of just 14 counties statewide to receive a clean audit for fiscal year 2024.

A clean audit means the County’s financial records were reviewed with no discrepancies or findings, reflecting strong financial management and compliance with accounting standards.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and professionalism of our Finance Department, Highway Department, School System, and County leadership,” said Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters. “Maintaining this level of financial excellence requires dedication across all levels of government, and I’m incredibly proud of the teamwork that made this possible.”

Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter echoed that sentiment: “Achieving a clean audit takes more than just sound numbers, it takes incredible cooperation and hard work from all Sevier County officials, including our team at the Highway Department led by Jonas Smelcer and the Sevier County School System under the leadership of Director Stephanie Huskey. We’re especially grateful for the efforts of Brooke Huffaker in the Mayor's Office, April Gentry-Tallman with the Highway Department, and Whit Helton with the School System. These individuals and their teams help ensure Sevier County continues to operate with transparency and fiscal integrity.”

Brooke Huffaker, Assistant County Mayor and Senior Director of Finance and Administration, praised the staff for their efforts: “The clean audit is a direct result of the attention to detail, consistency, and teamwork displayed by the Finance Department staff daily. I’m proud to work alongside such dedicated professionals.”

Sevier County’s clean audit reflects a broader commitment to strong internal controls, responsible budgeting, and long-term financial planning.
