Comment Saugatuck City Council I recently reviewed the Minutes from the last Council meeting and noted the discussion regarding whether the Kalamazoo Lake Harbor Authority remains necessary. I would like to emphasize that the Authority continues to serve an essential purpose. 1

We have engaged Greg Weykamp of Edgewater Resources to help identify available grant opportunities and state and federal funding sources for dredging and maintaining the Harbor. This work goes directly to the original mission of the Authority and underscores why its role remains vital. While the Harbor is currently navigable, history has shown that water levels inevitably decline. When they do, navigation will become even more difficult than in the past, as silt continues to accumulate daily. The Harbor is Saugatuck's most valuable asset. Failing to plan for its future would be extremely short-sighted. Unfortunately, our community has already missed opportunities for funding in the past. A focused and sustained effort must be made to identify upcoming funding sources and to pursue them aggressively. Sincerely, Dick Waskin, Chairperson Kalamazo Lake Harbor Authority
