Masterwork began in 1955 in Whippany, New Jersey, when Shirley May gathered 28 singers in her living room and invited conductor David Randolph to help build a chorus with uncompromising standards.
That first ensemble grew into decades of concerts, theatrical events, fine-arts projects, grants, and awards. After Shirley May's death in 2016, the Foundation recommitted itself to expanding her vision for changing artistic needs.
Today Masterwork promotes, presents, and supports music, dance, theatre, and visual art. Its awards help original work begin, strengthen community arts programming, and recognize emerging artists. A Life in the Arts preserves the insight of people who have devoted their lives to creative practice.
