When does the application open?

Is Durham PreK really free?
For 2026–2027, families below 450% of the Federal Poverty Level pay nothing. Families at or above 450% FPL pay a monthly fee calculated at 2% of gross monthly income.
Who is eligible?
Any child who turns 4 on or before August 31 of the school year and lives in Durham County, regardless of income or immigration status.
Does immigration status matter?
No. Durham PreK is open to any 4-year-old in Durham County. The application asks for proof of age, residency, and income, not citizenship.
What documents do I need?
Proof of your child’s age, proof of Durham County residency, and proof of income. You upload them during the online application.
What if I miss the August 31 age cutoff?
A child who turns 4 after August 31 would apply the following school year. Reach out and the team can point you to other options in the meantime.
